Certified Diabetes Educator
Carmelita is a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator. She has over 25 years of experience working in the field of diabetes. Her mother (a nurse herself) developed diabetes when Carmelita was a teenager. The issues that her mother experienced when learning to manage diabetes left a great impression on Carmelita. Once she completed nursing school, she realized that her calling was to help patients with diabetes, especially the Hispanic population. She is sympathetic to the difficulties that the Spanish-speaking population faces when learning to manage their diabetes, including language and cultural barriers.
Carmelita has worked in various settings including inpatient (insulin, meter and diabetes management skills), outpatient (gestational pregnancy, 1:1 diabetes management skills, teaching diabetes management classes), community outreach (health fairs), Journey for Control Map programs, church ministry (guest speaker). She has 5 years of experience with telephone outreach helping patients meet their A1C goals.
